Classroom Portion:
Students under 18 in NC must complete 30 hours of class and 6 hours of behind the wheel
instruction in order to be eligible for a permit. Students must be 14 1⁄2 years of age to begin the
classroom portion of the program.
Students may take an in person class offered through MPI (mtnpro.com/school-classes). MPI will
send emails when new classes are posted to site subscribers. Eligibility requirements will be listed
in registrations for those classes. Alternatively, students may take a virtual course offered through
wresa.org

Driving Portion: Please contact [email protected] with any questions regarding scheduling
The driving portion is completed after the class portion. Driving occurs all summer and after school,
and Saturdays. Some schools allow students to drive during PE. Students are driven by DOB oldest
first within the groups they are received. Once the instructor receives the restricted permit you will
be scheduled to drive by date of birth, oldest first with this group. For instance, students whose
forms were received in Oct will drive before students received in Dec regardless of age so some
younger students that completed the course/turned in forms prior will drive before you.
Once the student has completed drivers ed, they will be issued a completion certificate. They will
take that certificate, their driver's eligibility certificate*, and DMV required documents to their
permit appointment at the DMV.
Permit time to be eligible for a level 2: Have held a level 1 permit for 9 months, be at least 16 years
of age, completed 60 hour driving log
